Since Aiden's in year-round school, he had a two week break in October
and we decided to take Scott's vacation so he could take me to Zion National Park like he's been promising since we were dating. It was a long drive, but lots of fun in our new car that actually fit all of our camping gear and our bums nicely.
We broke up our trip with a stop in Gunnison where Aiden was pleased as punch to help dad and grandpa do some work with the tractor:
We camped in Zion for one night, saw a movie at the IMAX, did lots of hiking on level, paved trails--stopping frequently so Aiden could play in the powder-fine dirt. He was mesmerized by it; continually colliding with people on the trail because he couldn't take his eyes off his own perfect footprints in the red dust. Scott and I staring up at the mountains, Aiden down at his feet, and Nora just smiling at everyone we passed.
And then there were the shuttles... in Aiden's mind, the entire reason for visiting the mountains, the museum, or the movie. The main attraction. Completely oblivious to the undeniably pungent mark thousands upon thousands of sweaty hikers forced into a 45 minute shuttle ride leave on upholstery. At one point he overheard a fellow rider comment loudly on the smell, to which he responded just as loudly, "isn't this bus great, mom?!?" I think he was genuinely confused that someone might not love it.
The wonder of four-year-old eyes.
After a long drive back to Gunnison and a round of showers, we headed out again to camp up Mayfield Canyon. We had a perfect spot with no one to bother us for 3 days. We rode, and fished, and ate to our hearts content,
enjoying the perfect setting to read The Hunger Games.
Very surreal.
In surmise: per. fec. tion.

I think that would be one of the great things with year around - being able to have vacations and breaks during the school year. I love that he loved the bus!
